EMERGENCY OVERVIEW

CAUTION: Excessive concentrations of dust may cause nose, throat and eye irritation. The ingredients of some products may cause skin and respiratory sensitization in sensitive individuals.

3. Hazards Identification

Primary Routes(s) of Entry
Inhalation, skin/eye contact

Eye Hazards

Dust may cause mechanical irritation to the eyes. Some mixtures containing lime and other minerals may cause mild chemical irritation.

Skin Hazards

Prolonged or repeated contact may remove natural skin oils causing drying, cracking, dermatitis and irritation. Certain types of wood dust and related organic materials may elicit an allergic contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals.

Ingestion Hazards

Ingestion of harmful quantities is unlikely. However, ingestion may cause gastronintestinal upset, nausea and vomiting.

Inhalation Hazards

Inhalation may cause nasal dryness, irritation, coughing, wheezing, sneezing and sinusitus. Repeated inhalation of high dust concentrations may overload the lung clearance mechanism, irritate mucous membranes and make the lungs more vulnerable to respriatory disease. Respiratory sensitization may occur from certain ingredients in sensitive individuals. Certain ingredients of these products may contain trace amounts of crystalline silica. Excessive inhalation of silica may cause respiratory disease, including silicosis, pneumoconiosis and pulmonary fibrosis.

4. First Aid Measures

Eye

In case of contact, hold eyelids apart and immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.

Skin

Wash affected areas with soap and water. Get medical attention if irritation, redness or rash develops and persists.

Ingestion

If person is fully conscious, give one or two cups of water or milk to drink. Get medical attention. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious victim.

Inhalation

If adverse effects occur, remove to an uncontaminated area. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical attention.

5. Fire Fighting Measures

Fire And Explosion Hazards

Highly concentrated clouds of wood dust and organic material may result in a dust explosion in the presence of an ignition source. Some products may burn when exposed to excessive heat or flame.

Extinguishing Media

In case of fire, soak (flood) with water.

Fire Fighting Instructions

Firefighters should wear self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective gear. Burning material inside bags or piles may remain hot and reignite after the surface fire is extinguished. Water can be used to cool and protect exposed material.

6. Accidental Release Measures

Pick up released product with appropriate implements and return to original container if reusable. Avoid generating dust during cleanup. Use respiratory protection in case of high dust concentrations.

7. Handling & Storage

Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and animals who may consume the products.

Handling & Storage (Pictograms)

Work/Hygienic Practices

Use good personal hygiene. Wash hands after handling. These materials are made from natural products and may contain natural microorganisms. Proper precautions are advised to prevent infection of open wounds.

Protective Clothing (Pictograms)

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Engineering Controls

None normally required. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid dusty conditions by using dust controls when necessary.

Eye/Face Protection

Safety glasses with side shields or goggles are recommended for dusty conditions.

Skin Protection

None normally required. However, work gloves are recommended in case of open skin abrasions that are not adequately protected.

Respiratory Protection

None normally required. Use of an N95 dust mask / respirator is recommended for dusty conditions.

Incompatible Materials

Incompatibilities vary from material to material. Most are reactive with strong oxidizing agents. Mineral containing products may be incompatible with strong acids.

Hazardous Decomposition Products

Thermal oxidization (i.e., burning) of wood products may produce irritating and toxic fumes and gases of carbon monoxide, aldehydes, calcium hydroxide and organic acids.

11. Toxicological Information

Chronic/Carcinogenicity

The Internation Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and National Toxicology Program (NTP) classify Wood Dust as carcinogenic in humans (Group 1). This classification is based primarily on increased risk of adenocarcinomas of the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses associated with exposure to wood dust.

Certain minerals in these products, such as sand, may contain crystalline silica, quartz. Quartz is considered to be carcinogenic in humans by IARC (Group 1) and a Known Human Carcinogen by the NTP. Quartz is also listed as a carcinogenic under California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (aka Proposition 65) and possibly carcinogenic (A2) by ACGIH.
